"Glass itself is so much like water. If you let it go on its own it almost ends up looking like something that came from the sea." —Dale Chihuly

Chihuly’s Niijima Floats are recognized for their remarkably large scale, form and rich color combinations. Significant to the artist’s career, these have been documented as the largest blown glass sculptures ever made. Developed in 1991, this series has been exhibited in numerous site specific installations including The New York Botanical Garden and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Highlighting the impressive series known as Niijima Floats, Mystic Cove exemplifies Chihuly’s spontaneous approach to drawing using layers of colors. The background is a blend of cool aquamarine colors with a Float defined by silver ink and pearl white handwork. Several more layers of green ‘dots’ delineate the interior of the Float. The end result is a six-color serigraph with handwork achieving an intimate and alternative connection to Chihuly’s innovative work in glass. Mystic Cove is signed in custom acrylic paint and numbered in pencil.
